Project Objective
Commissioned by the Port Authority of Savona, the first Feasibility Study for the new motorway toll station and interchange along the A10 “Autostrada dei Fiori”, within the Municipality of Vado Ligure, in the Province of Savona, was developed in 2007.
The definition of the location of the intervention required an extensive territorial and environmental assessment, made particularly complex by the presence of numerous infrastructural, urban planning, and landscape constraints. Several alternative solutions were therefore analyzed within the study, with particular attention devoted to minimizing environmental impacts and optimizing construction costs, in order to ensure the technical and economic sustainability of the project and the consistency of the cost-benefit analysis results.
From the earliest stages of the project development, the intervention received significant institutional support. The involved public administrations and their technical departments provided essential contributions and guidelines for identifying an effective infrastructure solution, consistent with the objectives of improving mobility and enhancing accessibility to the port and industrial areas of the territory.
The alternatives identified during the Feasibility Study were subsequently further developed through the Preliminary Design phase, carried out in 2013 in collaboration with SINA S.p.A., the engineering company of the ASTM Group.
The new infrastructure, strategically located upstream of the urban area, is intended to improve the connection between the surrounding industrial zones, the “Aurelia bis” roadway system, the port basin of Vado Ligure, the multipurpose terminal operated by A.P. Moller – Maersk, and the “Scorrimento” arterial road towards Savona.
The project was conceived with the objective of avoiding additional burdens on the existing urban and extra-urban road network while, on the contrary, significantly improving traffic conditions and environmental sustainability through a substantial reduction in traffic volumes, particularly heavy vehicles generated by port-related activities.
Particular importance is attributed to the expected reduction in traffic flows along the Intermunicipal Road connecting to the existing motorway toll station of Savona, thereby mitigating the current issues related to congestion, traffic circulation, and environmental impact.
Subsequently, SINA S.p.A. carried out the Final Design phase of the intervention between 2021 and 2023, incorporating the requirements issued by the Italian High Council of Public Works during the technical approval process of the project, formalized through the issuance of a specific technical opinion.
The various design alternatives analyzed mainly differed in the configuration of the connection ramps between the new motorway toll station, the municipal road network, and the “Aurelia bis”, and therefore in the different connection schemes with the port basin of Vado Ligure and the existing territorial infrastructure system.
